A bird causes power outage in Idaho Falls

A bird is being blamed for causing a power outage for nearly 7,000 customers Saturday morning in Idaho Falls.

Idaho Falls Power Manager Van Ashton said it happened at the Hatch substation on the northeast section of town.

The outage occurred at approximately 10:19 a.m. and restored at 11:52 a.m., Ashton reported. The outage was caused by a bird getting into one of the substation’s transformers, he said.

It affected people in an area from Irving Avenue on the north to 25th Street on the south, and from Hoopes Avenue on the east to Holmes Avenue on the west, Ashton said.
