Shoppers take advantage of Labor Day deals

When you think of Labor Day, barbeques and camping probably come to mind. But did you know it’s one of the biggest shopping days of the year?

In fact, retailers are looking to make it a summertime version of Black Friday, by showcasing deep discounts at stores and online to draw in customers.

Jen Munoz and her three kids scored some back-to-school clothes at Target Monday, even though she doesn’t usually shop on Labor Day.

“Today I was just thinking about it, because I got coupons in the mail and that kind of thing,” said Munoz.

Seth and Kelleen Meyers weren’t planning on shopping either, but the day off had them hitting the shopping aisles for some unexpected items.

Labor Day is also a popular holiday for furniture shopping.

At Blacker’s in Idaho Falls, shoppers were out in full force. This kept staff on their toes.

Store manager Collin Cook said folks usually come in for particular products.

“Mattresses are big and appliances are big. Really, everyone comes in because they know we’ve got stuff on sale,” said Cook.

Darren Schaat and his family came in looking for a bed and a fridge, after hearing about the good prices around town.

“Always a great day to go shopping and get something that you might not get on any other day, for a good price,” said Schaat.

In his case, it was a comfortable price for an equally comfortable purchase.

Regardless of Monday’s sales, the National Retail Federation reports do not consider Labor Day to be a consumer holiday.
