Family Crisis Center celebrating 25 years
A safe haven for families throughout eastern Idaho is celebrating 25 years of growth.
The Family Crisis Center in Rexburg is pulling out all the stops to bring attention to its cause this week.
It is a support center mainly for abused women who are victims of domestic violence.
Not only that, but members of this non-profit group actually go into schools to teach kids about healthy relationships.
The center does a lot for the community and now they’re asking for a little help in return.
Tami moved to Rexburg from Seattle last year for a fresh start.
“A superior court judge decided that he would allow me to go to college to try to break the cycle of poverty in my family as a single mom,” said Tami.
Moving away from abusive men in her life put a stop to physical violence, but not necessarily the psychological abuse.
“Leaving the relationship didn’t stop the abuse,” said Tami.
When Tami found the Family Crisis Center, they helped her recognize what she was going through.
“In the time of crisis when I’m dealing with legal matters, I can come in and just get some kind of hug,” said Tami.
Margie Harris is one of those people Tami relies on.
She’s been with the center for 18 years and has seen a lot of women walk through the doors and walk out a different person.
“I’m grateful everyday that I’m able to be here,” said Harris.
State Sen. Brent Hill and his wife have volunteered for the center for years.
He said Tami’s story is just one of many success stories.
“I don’t think you can count the number of lives that have been blessed by the Family Crisis Center over the past 25 years,” said Hill.
Tami is majoring in social work at Brigham Young University – Idaho.
She hopes to give back to others what the center has given to her.
