Sheriff’s races steal the spotlight
Election day is a week from Tuesday.
Local races are really starting to heat-up, especially when it comes to law enforcement.
Some of the races for sheriff are stealing the spotlight from other county offices that usually stand out on election day.
There are write-in candidates for sheriff in at least three counties: Bonneville, Madison and Jefferson.
Reporter Jessica Crandall spoke with two of these candidates who said they are looking to bring big changes if elected.
Some people believe things are getting too negative.
It’s crunch time for write-in candidate Travis Williams.
He was in Madison County Monday hitting the pavement and handing out brochures. He’s looking to get some support in the final stretch before Nov. 6.
“I’m running because I believe in this community. I’ve lived here for 20 years,” said Williams.
Williams worked for his opponent, incumbent Sheriff Roy Klingler, for 18 years.
After he was fired in July, Williams threw his hat into the race.
He said he already wanted to do that.
“We decided to run for sheriff long before I was let go from the sheriff’s office,” said Williams.
Klingler doesn’t buy it.
“I think it was just kind of the final straw that upset him when I let him go in July. I don’t know what other words to use other than he’s got a big axe to grind,” said Klingler.
Williams has been far from silent about what he said are big flaws within Madison County law enforcement.
“We’re spending a lot of money in the sheriff’s office that I don’t think is a responsible use of taxpayer money,” said Williams.
A lot of people feel it’s getting too personal.
“It’s very hard because when he came in I promoted him to sergeant, to lieutenant and then to captain,” said Klingler.
This isn’t the only county experiencing some drama with the office of sheriff. Former Rigby Mayor Ryan Brown is taking on Jefferson County incumbent Blair Olsen as a write-in candidate.
He said it’s time for more transparency.
