2 rescued on Snake River

Two Pocatello men were stranded on the Snake River when their canoe capsized Saturday.

The Power County Sheriff’s Office said Michael E. Jones and Norman W. Davis were stranded on the river near the Duck Point area around noon.

Power County EMS, Search and Rescue, American Falls Police, Power County sheriff’s deputies and a federal Fish and Wildlife officer responded to the area to assist with the rescue.

According to the sheriff’s office, “heroic” efforts by the Fish and Wildlife officer, who pulled the men to safety, may have saved their lives.

After being pulled to safety, Jones was airlifted to Portneuf Medical Center while Davis and another member of their hunting party, Thomas Jones, were transported by ambulance to the Power County hospital where they were treated and released. As of Monday, Michael Jones was still at Portneuf Medical Center.

Deputies said no life preservers were in use on the canoe at the time of the accident. Weather was a contributing factor in the incident.
