Highland senior suspended 1 game after elbowing incident

Highland senior basketball player Colton Shreve has been suspended one game by head coach Chris Frost, said Travis Bell, the Rams’ athletic director.

The suspension comes after Shreve elbowed Skyline senior Xavier Banks in the face during the first quarter of Friday night’s contest at Highland High School, he said. Shreve will serve the suspension Wednesday night as the Rams head to Utah for a holiday tournament.

Skyline did not file a complaint, but Bell confirmed to Sports Line that Highland was asked to investigate the elbow incident. Highland alerted the 5th District Board of Control and the Idaho High School Activities Association of the investigation.

Banks, the grandson of Melaleuca CEO Frank VanderSloot, suffered a mild concussion, broke two teeth and needed eight stitches on the lip as a result of the contact, according to Banks’ parents, Sam and LaurieKae Banks.

Sam Banks acknowledged the potential of legal action, saying, “It’s a possibility, not to necessarily hurt the kid, but the whole process of someone doing something like that and not receiving any consequences. …I don’t think it’s enough. It’s kind of a slap on the wrist. It doesn’t send the message to the kid that what he did was wrong.”

LaurieKae Banks added, “My concern, personally, is that kids have a safe place to play. That obviously didn’t happen. This kind of activity has no place on the court.”

According to LaurieKae, Xavier Banks has been cleared to play Wednesday night as the Grizz host Bonneville at 7:30. If any symptoms reoccur, though, Banks will have to come out of the game.
