Wyoming troopers nab $94K of pot in traffic stop
Two men are in custody, along with over $94,000 worth of marijuana, after a routine traffic stop near Evanston, Wyo., on Sunday afternoon.
A Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper pulled over a car for allegedly going 85 mph in a 75 mph zone about 31 miles east of Evanston on eastbound Interstate 80.
The driver, identified as 33-year-old Dennis Rodriguez, did not have a valid driver’s license. A nationwide check showed Rodriguez was wanted in the state of Florida on an outstanding felony warrant for trafficking in cocaine.
A passenger, identified as 42-year-old Joseph Spivey, could not produce a driver’s license either.
A search of their car turned up two suitcases carrying just over 15 pounds of packaged marijuana. Neither man claimed ownership of the luggage. The marijuana has an approximate street value of $94,200.
Rodriguez was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance, felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, felony possession of a Class 4 drug, speeding and driving without a valid driver’s license. In addition to the Wyoming charges, Rodriguez is being held pending extradition to Florida on the outstanding warrant.
Spivey was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance and felony possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
The Highway Patrol believes the two men were transporting their load from California to an unknown destination in Florida.
