Ammon man accused of arson

An Ammon man was arrested on a charge of arson after sheriff’s deputies say he lit part of a home on fire early Sunday morning.

Just before 3 a.m. Sunday, Ammon and Bonneville County emergency crews responded to a report of a structure fire in the Eagle Pointe neighborhood on Willow Canyon Drive.

Deputies said they arrived before fire crews, and there was a fire inside the home. They worked to evacuate those inside. Two adults with a 2-year-old girl were able to make it out of the home.

Deputies say they found a third adult man, William Lavatta, barricaded in a bathroom, which was partially engulfed in fire.

They kicked down the bathroom door and were able to remove Lavatta.

Two deputies were able to put out most of the fire with a garden hose before fire crews arrived at the home.

Lavatta admitted to starting the fire, the sheriff’s office said.

This fire is still under investigation.
