Man arrested at university, linked to LA bank robbery

A suspect in a California bank robbery was arrested at Idaho State University Friday morning.

Around 5:30 a.m., Pocatello police arrested Michael C. Callender, 23, on a warrant in connection to a bank robbery in Los Angeles last year. Local authorities were working with the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department.

During the arrest, ISU sent out phone and Internet alerts warning people to stay away from theOwen Redfield Complex if possible. ISU sent out a second call an hour later, telling students the complex was clear.

Last semester, Callender was the host of “Unfinished Dream,” a radio show on KISU that played jazz, R&B and soul.

Because the investigation is still open, the Los Angeles Police Department detective on the case said she can not release any information on the details of the robbery.

Many students on campus complained about the alerts received, saying because there was no incident or immediate danger, they should not have received a call. University officials say it is law to inform anyone of potential danger on the campus.

They said if you would prefer to change your emergency notification settings, you can access them by going to www.bengalweb.isu.edu, click on the Academic Tools tab, and select ISU Emergency Notification System.
