Hundreds run in Teton Dam Marathon

Runners from all across eastern Idaho took part in Rexburg’s Teton Dam Marathon Saturday morning.

Marathoners ran 26.2 miles starting at the Teton Dam and finishing at Smith Park.

“There was a headwind most of the way. Even the cross wind kind of ended up being a headwind,” said Lynette Kunz, the first woman to cross the finish line in this year’s full marathon.

Marathoners and spectators alike were met with less-than-favorable conditions around midmorning when the big dam in the sky burst, sprinkling them with rain.

“That’s kind of a good thing. When you have a little bit of a cloud cover, it keeps you a little cooler, and, the rain, it’s just light sprinkles, so you don’t mind it,” said Kunz.

For some, the race didn’t end at the finish line. After accepting his medal, Collin Andrus, who finished second place, sprinted straight for the nearest bathroom.

“All the Port-A-Potties were taken on the last 4 miles, so I was just excited I was gonna finish non-stop, but as soon as I got here, I had to make a run for the bathroom,” said Andrus.

Andrus, a former football player, exceeded his own expectations, crossing the finish line just over three hours and 19 minutes into the marathon.

“My goal was like a 3:45 and I ended up getting like a 3:20 so I kept my goal by a bunch. I’m pretty happy about that,” said Andrus.
