ISU, Pocatello reach agreement on campus officers

Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad and ISU President Arthur Vailas say they are committed to working together after meeting privately late Friday to address concerns about the school’s public safety officers.

Last week the city attorney accused ISU’s officers of delaying calls to Pocatello police in the case of a professor who accidentally shot himself. In another case, police said security officers pulled a driver over and administered a breath test before calling police.

“There may have been some specific ones that could have been better,” said Vailas.

But Blad said Friday that for the most part, ISU has been good about calling the police and that the school will continue to do so.

Vailas said the school will also work with the city to establish means for addressing future concerns.

“Certainly we will consider those together so that we even have a stronger bond than we’ve had for 30 years,” said Vailas.

Blad said Pocatello Police Chief Scott Marchand and ISU Public Safety Director Stephen Chatterton plan to meet on a monthly basis.
