T-Mobile may be considering new site for Chubbuck cell tower

Local News 8 has learned T-Mobile may still be interested in building a cell tower in Chubbuck.

In December, Chubbuck City Council denied the carrier’s request to build a tower on the grounds of Chubbuck Elementary. But Chubbuck Mayor Kevin England said T-Mobile has since asked the city if they’d be open to them building one in Stuart Park.

“At this point, they haven’t made any kind of an official application with us. They’ve just contacted to see if we’d be willing,” said England.

Ann Johnson, who lives several blocks away from the park, said she’d rather T-Mobile find another site.

“I understand people would like the cell tower for better service and quality on their phones, but I feel that they could find maybe a better location,” said Johnson.

Johnson frequents the park with her daughter and worries there wouldn’t be room for a cell tower.

“This is what the city provided for us, and I would like to use every inch of it,” said Johnson.

But some say they’d welcome a cell tower.

“That would be good. That way they can have a good reception on their cell phones,” said parkgoer Laura Hoffer.

T-Mobile currently has no cell towers in Chubbuck and has previously said that coverage in the area is spotty.

If T-Mobile is still interesting in building a cell tower, England said they would have to file an official application with the city before obtaining a conditional use permit and going through the public hearing process.

“There’s a whole ordinance that has things that they need to do,” said England.

Local News 8 contacted a T-Mobile representative, but we have not heard back.
