Hillcrest saxophone player wins award

High school is a time when many young people discover their passion in life. That’s been the case with Hillcrest High School senior James Ballinger.

James Ballinger practices his saxophone three or four times a day.

“I like everything about music,” Ballinger said. “It’s hard to pin it down to just one thing. Music has been a big thing in my life.”

Ballinger says it’s an amazing experience to perform in front of an audience.

“When I’m actually performing I’m not nervous,” Ballinger said. “Before and after, I am, but when I’m on stage I’m right there on top of everything and barely think about anything else.”

As much as he enjoys playing music, Ballinger says teaching it is even more fun. He tutors middle school students and friends. He loves when they “get” a concept he’s teaching.

“I feel very happy for myself and I feel very excited for them, knowing they now know something that will benefit them later,” Ballinger said.

It’s no wonder what James wants to do as a career.

“Band teacher – I want to teach music at some point,” Ballinger said.

High school has been a great experience for Ballinger and he has this advice for other students.

“Have fun. Do things that entertain and interest you. Go above and beyond if you ever get the opportunity. Join as many clubs as you can.”
