IFPD says goodbye to one of its own

The Idaho Falls Police Department is saying goodbye to one of its own. Sgt. David Freihad his last day on the job Tuesday.

“For 30 years I’ve been coming to this building and doing this job, and after today I won’t be doing that,” said Frei.

Frei has done a little bit of everything during his 30 years with the IFPD. He worked in undercover narcotics, as a detective and then eventually was promoted to sergeant.

“The job kind of does shape you in the sense that you want to be a servant to somebody you want to make somebody else’s day better,” Frei said. “That’s why we do this, for those opprotnities to help people.”

But there were some rough times. In 2007, Sgt. Frei received a Purple Heart after being being attacked in the line of duty.

Even with that experience, Frei said his career has been incredibly rewarding.

“Everybody I know here gets up in the morning hoping for an opportunity to help somebody and that’s what keeps us going,” he said.

Frei said it’s going to be hard not being a cop, but he is really looking forward to spending time with his family, especially the grandkids.

He also helped bring the Amber Alert system to the Idaho Falls area. His official retirement date is Feb. 16.
