Pocatello family loses home to fire

A Pocatello family was left with nothing after waking up to flames Sunday morning.

The fire happened at a trailer home at 995 Wilson Ave. The family made it safely out of their home thanks to their 11-year-old son waking them up.

“I woke up hearing my son yelling, ‘There’s a fire in my room,'” Duey Littlefield said. “I just got up as quickly as I could and I ran out and looked in the room, and there were flames coming out of the closet.”

After unsuccessfully trying to extinguish the fire, Littlefield and his family ran out of the house. The fire department arrived at the scene around 3 a.m., according to neighbors, and left close to 6 a.m.

Neighbors recalled seeing flames shooting out of windows. Randy Rupe, whose home is less than 15 feet away, said he saw three to five foot flames shooting out of the kitchen window onto a tree in his yard.

“I woke up to someone pounding on my door and the neighbor’s house was on fire. I had a moment of panic,” Rupe said.

The fire department is investigating the fire. Littlefield suspects that the electric box in the 11-year-old’s room is what caused the fire.

The family is immediately in need of toiletries, coats and clothing. Any donations can be dropped off at 1550 Yellowstone Ave., No. 165, in Belaire Estates Mobile Home Park. Donated items can be left in the driveway.
