Rexburg holds public forum on vaping

A panel made up of three police officers and Madison Junior High’s principal fielded questions about vaping from the public Wednesday night.

Madison Junior High and Madison High School have seen more students using e-cigarettes or vape pens. At the forum, hosted by the City Council, parents asked questions about the liquids used, how to talk to kids about vaping and what the laws are.

People 18 years and older are allowed to vape and possess vape pens or e-cigs. However, police officers said it hasn’t stopped students from getting hold of them. One officer mentioned that some junior high students had bought them from high school students that were of age. Some kids have even convinced their parents to get them one by saying it’s a better alternative to smoking.

Kelly McKaney, who has a child in junior high, wanted to learn more about the new trend.

“Tonight, it was just more of an informational meeting and presenting the challenges,” said McKaney. “I wasn’t aware that they were able to get it online.”

Officers said their biggest recommendation to parents is to educate yourself and your children.
