Pocatello renews federal fire agreement

A long-standing agreement between the Pocatello Fire Department and several federal agencies was renewed for another five years during Thursday’s City Council meeting.

The Federal Cooperative Fire Protection Agreement allows the city’s fire department to pool resources with the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service in the event of large wildfires.

“What a mutual aid agreement generally offers is access to more resources for those fires that are above and beyond what you’re normally capable of handling, and have a ready-access system so you don’t have to work out all the details while the house is on fire, while the hill is on fire,” said Pocatello Fire Chief David Gates.
