30 elk die after falling through ice
About 30 elk were killed after they fell through thin ice while crossing Grey’s River near Alpine, Wyoming.
Wyoming Game and Fish wildlife biologist Gary Fralick in Afton said it happened around March 1.
He said a herd of 50 to 60 elk wintered near the confluence of Grey’s River and Snake River. The elk had been regularly crossing from one area to another.
Game and Fish Warden Todd Graham said Friday the elk washed up onto the shore anywhere from half a mile to one and a half miles downstream. He estimates six ended up on the Wyoming side of the river and 25 in Idaho.
Fralick said such incidents are not unusual. In the mid-1990s, about 25 elk fell through shelf ice below the Snake River Bridge and met a similar fate.
