Churches react to recent religious survey
The Pew Religious Landscape survey just released surprising results on the growing amount of millennials that are becoming atheist and agnostic.
Madison Wilken said, “I don’t have a name for it. There’s no religion or anything that I follow.”
Greg Bass, of the First Presbyterian Church said, “I am concerned with people that don’t have a belief in a higher power because so many of us encounter problems that are bigger than we are.”
“They are losing faith in what is happening in the world . They think no one is looking over us, “said Christine Castille, member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The percentage of Americans who consider themselves unaffiliated with any religion has risen from 16% to 23% since 2007.Anita Litteer of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church said, “I feel bad for them. I think they are missing something in their lives by not having God in their life.”
“Mostly I believe that everything is too big for humans to understand. We as humans don’t have the capacity to understand why we’re here,” said Wilken.
Sandy Kruger of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church stated, “It makes me sad that they’ve strayed away. I think most young people do for a time.”
The overwhelming opinion is that millennials find religion unimportant.
Wilken said, “I don’t think we are bound by rules here on earth.”
“They find services boring, their lives are so busy, and they have too many things going on. It’s not a priority for them,” says Litteer.
Ray Hansen of Watersprings Church says, “I think that the word of God is unchanging and as our culture changes we try to change with that the word of God. I think we try to make church trendy.”
“I think it’s a higher consciousness. I don’t believe that He, or even It. I just don’t think we can fathom what it is,” said Wilken.
Bass said, “With millennials not pursuing any belief in a higher power they are out there by themselves. They are relying on themselves to fix their problems. Some problems are just too big to solve by yourself.”
