Scout camp canceled, bear found near campground

After a bear was found around the Boy Scouts Treasure Mountain campsite, some scouts camping plans changed a bit.

“He seemed to be hanging around a little more than he should,” said David Widdison, Director of Camping and Program for the Grand Teton Scout Council.

Which is why the Grand Teton Scout Council moved about 300 scouts away from the camp this week.

Sending them to Little Lehmi and Island Park.

The U.S Forest Service evacuated nearby campgrounds.

Some campgrounds are now considered safe.

This time of year there are several precautions campers need to take.

“The more that we move into their area, the more conflict we see,” said Diane Probasco, zone biologist for the U.S Forest Service.

The biggest thing to do is to pick up after yourself, keep food locked up in food boxes, and throw away trash.

This isn’t the first time scouts have found bears near campsites.

Although, this is the first time they’ve felt the need to cancel camp because of one.

The scouts do have the green light to have camp back at Treasure Mountain next week.
