Kind acts accentuated slain Chicago officer’s brief career

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago police officer who was fatally shot this month has been remembered for her compassion with stories of kindnesses, big and small. At a 90-minute funeral service on Thursday, speakers told of how Officer Ella French rushed a one-year-old gunshot victim to the hospital, and ferried stray dogs to animal shelters. French was killed Aug. 7 when a passenger in a vehicle opened fire during a routine traffic stop. Another officer was critically injured. Two men suspected in the shooting have been arrested. The 29-year-old French was the first female department member to be killed in the line of duty since 1988.
