Keeping it clean
Pocatello’s curbside recycling program is painting a green picture. One of the goals is to keep landfills from overflowing.
In order to keep the Gate Gity green, the Pocatello Sanitation Department has moved to a more centralized location.
So it will be more convenient for their trash trucks to pick up waste along with recyclable items.
The lot they took over, has plenty of space for all their equipment.
“It’s just been nice having everything right here on hand. And easy access to get to,” said Brian Willard, operations supervisor.
The Pocatello curbside recycling program so far has kept about 2,365 tons of recyclable items out of the Bannock County Landfill.
The recycling coordinator for the Sanitation Department has seen improvements, and looks forward to more recycling.
“That you dispose of things correctly, and keep them out of the landfill, because eventually you’re gonna be building your homes on landfills space because there is no space anymore. But snow snowmobiling, skiing and bicycling are all the things we enjoy the hiking also. It will all erode, if we don’t keep the environment clean,” Debbie Brady, coordinator of the sanitation department.
This program comes with big saving for the city, cutting back on $10,000 in landfill fees.
