Soda Springs homeowners decry proposed weed ordinance

Wednesday night’s Soda Springs City Council meeting saw higher turnout than usual as more than a dozen homeowners came to speak against the city’s proposed weed and litter ordinance.

An update to an existing city ordinance, the proposed rule states lawns can’t be more than eight inches tall and prohibits litter on private property.

It would also allow city workers to inspect properties without the permission of the property owner.

“This is a small community. I feel like it’s fairly clean. I’ve been to areas where that isn’t the case. I don’t see a lot of trashy places. I feel like they’re overreacting,” said property owner Coleen Benson.

If the ordinance passes, Soda Springs homeowners would be fined $100 for their first violation.

Wednesday’s public hearing was the final hearing on the ordinance which has yet to be voted on.
