Best Fair food gets tested
The Eastern Idaho State Fair starts Saturday. Preparations are underway for the event but one big attraction is getting tested early, the food.
Many of your old favorites will be there like the bacon crazy corn. But there are lots of new things to try including the huckleberry honey butter on fresh warm bread and the deep fried cinnamon roll with salted caramel on top.
Local News Eight’s Dan Larkin was one of the judges who helped decide which is this year’s best food.
The toffee tumbler is the winner of the best new food. That’s a baked toffee bread with caramel toffee bits and ice cream.
“When we were on vacation this last winter we were sitting a nice sunny beach and it was so cold in Idaho.,” says Jolene Secrist, owner of Sweet Temptations. “And so we were thinking of something warm that would be good to eat and we came up with name Toffee Tumbler and ran with it.”
The winner of the best overall food is last year’s best new food winner, the chocolate covered raspberry cream cheese brownie on a stick.
“We’re just excited that people like it again this year, we’re actually in the people’s choice contest as well, hopefully we can make it into the final four in that one as well,” says Joanne Smith from Creamy Creations. “So we’re just really humbled by the response we’ve gotten to it “
Last year fair goers spent $2.2 million just on food at the fair.
