Pocatello begins to prep streets for winter

The Gate City’s street department is getting ready for the wintry weather.

The street department will be meeting with the National Weather Service to get weather hazard briefings. These briefings will help the city’s street workers know how to best deal with upcoming weather.

The street department has also been going over what roads are used the most to see if their snow removal plan needs some changes.

Tom Kirkman, the street operations superintendent, said these preparations help keep their resources in check.

“(For this upcoming storm) it’s supposed to rain up until it turns into snow,” Kirkman said. “Normally, when we have an event coming we like to go out and treat the roads prior to the storm with salt brine solution. Since it’s going to be rain converted into snow, if we were to go out and treat the road it basically would wash that pre-treatment down.”
