WWII veteran, wife share their unique wedding story

Those who lived through World War II are known as the greatest generation.

They can teach us a lot about history, and they can also teach us about love.

Robert and Doris Cox just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary, and the spark is still there.

“I’ll tell you one thing that’s there and lives on,” said Robert. “Looking into those shining eyes of my dear wife.”

They got married on Nov. 6, 1946.

“It was a wonderful day,” Doris recalled. “We were intending to have all of the beets and all of the potatoes harvested because we had had a late fall.”
“And we were just finishing the spuds,” Robert said. “We set our wedding date clear into November, figuring the crops will all be done, things will be wonderful! Low and behold, we were just getting started on the sugar beets.”

“Frozen in the ground, but we went to the temple anyway,” Doris said. “Had an evening session after we worked in the beet field that day. And we had many loved ones with us.”

And then there’s the dress (that still fits).

“That I made from a Japanese parachute. A new Japanese parachute,” she said. “Because there was no fabric during the war. You couldn’t buy beautiful fabric in the stores. It was all going to soldiers’ uniforms.”
