Transition Center to close in Bingham County

The Bingham County Residential Transition Center will be closing.

This comes after the insurance carrier for the county will be excluding the RTC from its liability coverage.

According the Bingham County website, the transition center is a treatment facility to help youth develop the skills and behaviors to be successful in their own home and the community.

A letter to the county from the insurance carrier ICRMP says, “Recent claims experience has resulted in our inability to continue to underwrite the risks associated with the Bingham County Residential Transition Center.”

The insurance company cannot comment on open claims.

Local News 8 and Eyewitness News has learned a rape lawsuit could be one reason why ICRMP dropped the TRC.

That lawsuit claims back in 2010, a former TRC employee sexually abused a girl who lived there. That employee was fired and is in prison for the abuse.

The Bingham County Commissioners say this closure is not a reflection on how the facility is currently run.

The current residents are under the care of the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, and they will be relocated by Dec. 9.

Current RTC staff will remain employed with the county until Dec. 31.
