Rexburg woman creates petition asking local Walmart to close on Sundays

A Rexburg woman has created a petition on the website Change.org asking the management of the Rexburg Walmart to close the store on Sundays.

According to the petition on Change.org, the woman behind the petition contacted Walmart’s corporate offices after the new store’s opening and says those she spoke with expressed a desire to integrate with and serve the community in any way they could.

In the petition the creator states, “One of the ways we hope to get Walmart to support the values of this community is by closing on Sundays. By so doing, Walmart employees, managers, and contracted workers will be able to practice their faith and spend needed time with family.”

The petition already has more than 150 signatures.

A counter petition has also been filed, with a larger portion of people supporting it. The petition calls for Walmart to stay open and serve the Rexburg area on Sundays.

Keyla Fackrell , Walmart shopper said, “If you don’t want to go shopping on Sunday you don’t have too, it’s your choice.”

Ramier’s Mexican food restaurant has been in business for 14 years.

Danny Guerrero, chef said he’s against the petition.

“I get out of work at midnight. Last time my kid was sick I couldn’t find anything open to buy medicine. Around here everything is closed.”

Many stores around Rexburg are closed on Sundays, however, Alberton’s and fast food places stay open.

In a statement made by Walmart they said, “Walmart is committed to being a store of the community. We follow all local ordinances and make business decisions on a store by store basis in order to best serve the needs of our customers.”
