Greyhound bus station may be restored

Pocatello could be getting a new bus hub soon.

A committee is meeting Wednesday night to formally decide whether they’ll take on the project of renovating the former Greyhound bus station.

The old station has been vacant for about a year. Locals went to the Historic Preservation Commission to ask it to restore the station and keep it from falling into disrepair.

The cost to restore it will be about $500,000. The commission is currently working on getting grant money for it.

To help with grants, they are trying to get the building listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The exterior of the building needs repair and the restrooms need to be upgraded to meet ADA standards.

Pocatello Regional Transit supports the project and is hoping it will improve transportation.

“We would like to have the restrooms and the foyer area open to the public during the day because as it is now, it’s a transportation stop for Pocatello Regional Transit, and they would actually like to have it even more of a hub, if possible,” said Terri New, assistant planner for the City of Pocatello.

The formal announcement Wednesday night will allow plans on the project to officially move forward.
