Kids are saying ‘eureka’ to Science

Mountain Valley Elementary School has dedicated an entire week to science.

Over 160 children participated in the science fair, where more than 150 projects were showcased and judged by eight Idaho National Lab volunteer judges.

Projects were rated on a scale of 1 through 100, and three projects scored a perfect 100.

First grade teacher, Kalene Barnard said it’s very important for students to exercise critical thinking.

“The kids are doing STEM challenges every day at lunch, which gives kids the opportunity to build things, be hands-on and get kids to think critically,” Barnard said.

Fifth grader Abbie Holtom was given a honorable mention ribbon from INL judges for her science experiment.

“I did a project about who’s telling the truth. Is there a way to read body language in order to detect dishonesty?” Abbie said.

She said she’s a fan of science and math.

“Everyone loves science. I am very proud of my ribbon,” Abbie said.

Barnard also said events like these spark excitement in kids and encourage them to want to learn.
