Idaho Falls city council revising sign code

Idaho falls is looking at its city sign code, as more people push for more electronic signs in downtown.

City officials say the code needs to be updated because the sign industry has been changing as technology grows.

The proposed changes are trying to standardize the electronic sign operations through out the city.

The current ordinance allows these signs in various parts of the city, but each location has it’s own unique requirements that go with it.

“We have some businesses that have an electronic sign, and we have other businesses who do not. And I think council is very interested in trying to make it an equal playing field across the board,” said assistant planning director Kerry Beutler. “But part of that conversation too is, you know, how do electronic signs fit with downtown and with the era we’re trying to capture?”

The city council looked at this Monday during a work session. It will be talked about again at Thursday’s city council meeting.
