Contestants dive into cake for engagement ring

Picture an engagement ring hidden inside a wedding cake worth $2,000. Now to make it more interesting, envision 40 people diving in to find it. That’s what happened at the Grand Teton Mall Saturdayfor the 2016 Diamond Dive put on by Star 98.

The cake was 5 feet 10 inches tall and 800 pounds.

“It took about 165 cake mixes, 54 dozen eggs, 192 pounds of powdered sugar, 72 pounds of shortening, and over a quart of flavoring,” said Amy March of The Sugar Shell.

Inside the cake were 16 rings.

“We have a $2,000 diamond that’s baked into this cake, and we also have 15 other rings that represent other prizes,” said Preston Lee, program manager at Star 98.

The only person who knew where the big money diamond was hidden, was March, the creator of the massive cake.

“My oldest daughter gets people asking her, ‘Go find out from your mom where it’s at,’ and she says, ‘I have no idea where it’s at and mom’s not about to tell me,'” said March.

Contestants have been calling in to Star 98 for weeks trying to get their spot in the dive.

“So these are dedicated people, they’ve been training, they’ve been warming up for the past few years,” Lee said jokingly. “Now all that training is coming together for one moment, for the diamond dive.”

The diver to emerge from the cake-smeared floor holding the Jensen Jeweler’s ring was nick Musetti.

“I’m thinking about selling it because I don’t have anyone to give it to,” he said.

The cake was completely destroyed in a matter of seconds and all the rings were found within 15 minutes.
