St. Anthony establish a safe exchange zone
The community of St. Anthony is looking forward to a new program that will allow for thesafer exchange of goods purchased online or from classifieds.
The designated location for those who prefer doing business away from their home will be located at 420 North Bridge Street in St. Anthony.
The Safety Exchange Zone is near a busy main street that is well lite, the building also has several video surveillance cameras.
St. Anthony City Council Women Suzanne Bagley was inspired to adapt the program after her children told her they were buying something off Rexburg Garage Sales. Bagley said the idea of her children doing a transaction at a strangers house sounded dangerous.
“I said well where are you going to pick it up? And they told me at a strangers house and I literally flipped out,” Bagley said.
That’s when Bagley’s concern turned to action.
“I did a lot of research on Safety Zone exchange. I brought the idea before Fremont Council and I asked them if we could do it?” said Bagley.
Bagley also said that Safety Zones would be helpful for custody exchanges.
“You can pull up the tape and see what really went on, it’s going to be a great thing when it gets implemented,” Bagley said.
High school student James Bagley is helping his mom with the project, he said it’s important for the community.
“It’s really for protection for everyone, as a high school student we see it more than probably the adults do. We always sit and go on social media. And we sell things on social media. So it’s not just for the adults it’s for the youth in the area to keep them safe,” James said.
Safety Zone signs are in the process of being designed, the Fremont County Commissioner said they will take care of the costs for the sign. Once the sign sketches have been approved by the Mayor the signs will be made and put up.
James said they are hoping to have this process done within the next week.
“We asked to pay half but the commissioner said they felt it was needed so they would cover the entire cost,” James said.
