Gas leak temporarily evacuates homes on West Young Street

Around 4 p.m. Wednesday, utility crews were working on lines on West Young Street when they accidentally struck a gas line with a backhoe.

The break was on West Young Street on the block between Main Street and Arthur.

Three homes in the immediate vicinity were evacuated as a precaution.

Intermountain Gas worked to secure the area and shut the line off as quickly as possible. It took about an hour to shut the gas off and be able to safely allow people back into their homes.

Pocatello Fire Department Battalion Chief Curtis Smith said the area is safe, but crews will continue to work for the next couple of hours to repair the gas line.
