Could “Finding Dory” have an effect on local pet stores?

The movie “Finding Dory” comes out Friday and “Finding Nemo” fans are excited.

But could the new movie have an effect on pet stores?

According to research done by marine biologists at the University of Queensland in Australia, the number of sales of clown fish skyrocketed after “Finding Nemo”‘s release. Could the same trend occur with “Finding Dory?”

McKee’s Pet Center in Pocatello said it saw an increase in the price of clown fish from suppliers after “Finding Nemo” came out. But locally, they didn’t see an increase in the number of clown fish sales.

They did still see an increased interest in the fish. April Curtis, assistant manager, said she saw a lot of people coming in just wanted to see a real-life Nemo. She said while some wanted their own Nemo, they changed their mind when they learned how much goes into taking care of them.

Clown fish and blue-tang, or Dory, fish are saltwater fish. They require a special tank, food and very specific care. McKee’s said while they can never predict what people will do, they expect the dory fish to become a little more popular in the store.

“It’s hard to know for sure if that’s going to be something, a trend, that will happen again,” Curtis said. “But I certainly think that it is possible and it’ll be fun to see people come in and it’s kind of fun to be able to educate them and teach them about the Dory fish.”

McKee’s said to own your own Dory or Nemo, it would cost a minimum of $300 for all the proper equipment.

“Finding Dory” will be out in theaters June 17.
