Police warn about dangerous synthetic opioid

Pocatello Police are advising people to be wary of a synthetic opioid called U-47700. It is not currently controlled as a controlled substance, but is readily available in eastern Idaho on-line.

Three states, Ohio, Wyoming, and Georgia, have taken action to ban the drug after it was connected to overdoses.

A Pocatello police sergeant said U-47700 is especially strong and poses a high risk for potential overdose and respiratory depression. The drug has been linked to deaths in Europe and the United States. It is especially dangerous when used with fentanyl.

Police said they wanted the public to be aware of the dangers of the drug. They are concerned that people, especially youth, might mistakenly believe this drug is safe since it isn’t yet illegal in Idaho.

Police encouraged people to research the dangers of the drug and educate their friends and family.
