Pocatello speaks out on Dallas

Friday, the entire nation is focused on and talking about Dallas. What happened there Thursday night hits very close for law enforcement all across the country.

Sometimes it can be difficult to know what to do or say to those impacted. In Pocatello Friday, we reached out to the NAACP’s President Ken Monroe.

He says he does not believe the incident was an act of racism, but instead, dissatisfaction towards law enforcement.

“I think people are just concerned with law enforcement and perhaps are of the opinion that they’re overstepping their bounds. I don’t know. But that concerned me more than that people were going more toward that to justisfy what this guy did,” said Monroe.

He has gotten phone calls from people who have concerns with Dallas and our community in Pocatello. He reassured them we have a good close community and that what happened in dallas isn’t likely to happen here.

He believes in the right to bear arms but thinks there should be better control without infringing on people’s rights.

Monroe says his organization is always open to receiving calls and questions.

We also spoke to Pocatello Police about being ready in the event of an active shooter.

Captain Schei says officers do frequent active shooter training, but you can’t really know where or when something like Dallas will happen.

Schei says all you can do is be prepared for when violence does strike, but he says you can never be trained to be ambushed like the officers were in Dallas.

He says the only way to prevent violence anywhere is to be close with the community and stay vigilant.
