New storm drain in Rexburg

If you’re driving through Rexburg watch out for construction. There’s a significant amount of roadwork going on around town.

A new, 48-inch storm drain line is being worked on. The project was started a couple years ago and is in the last stages. The project is going to reconstructing 4th South, from 4th West to 2nd West, which is about 1,400 feet long.

Rexburg city engineer Keith Davidson said in the past years the roundabout at which the new drain pipe is located has experienced major flooding during the rainy season.

“The existing storm drain system wouldn’t handle the rain events that we’ve had. So we are bringing in a larger storm drain line to the area to handle those storm events,” Davidson said.

The city is also increasing the size of existing water lines and taking out old, corroded pipes.

The water line project is being financed through the Department of Environmental Quality and the storm drain project is being funded through the city.

The storm drain line will cost an estimated $1.3 million, according to Davidson.

Davidson said the city hopes to have the storm drain project completed by September.
