Sugar City Man Pleads Guilty to Rape Charge

Jose Guadalupe Nevarrez-Portillo pleaded guilty to one count of statutory rape on Monday. Nevarrez-Portillo initially faced a forcible rape charge, he’s taking a plea deal as long as he testifies truthfully in a court case related to the rape charge.

He faces a charge for raping a 16 year old girl, Nevarrez-Portillo said at the time he thought she was 18. Judge Moeller confirmed that is still not a reasonable defense for the crime.

Nevarrez-Portillo could face up to life in prison and fined $50,000. Additionally, he will have to register as a sex offender, possibly for the rest of his life and pay restitution to the victim.

Nevarrez-Portillo will be sentenced Nov. 7th, prior to that he’ll undergo a pre-sentence and psycho-sexual investigation.
