Firefighters make gains on Stein fire

UPDATE: 8/23/16

The Stein fire was 100 percent contained Tuesday and area closures were lifted.

Forest Service Road 071 is closed.

The cost of the fire was placed at $2,472,933.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Stein fire, burning about 15 miles north of Salmon is slowly spreading to the southeast and southwest. The lightning caused fire is estimated at 104 acres and is 65 percent contained.

A total of 355 firefighters are working to construct fire lines. So far, the fire has cost $2,068,168.

The fire, on the North Fork Ranger District, is located between Stein and North Mountains in steep terrain. Portions of the fire are within the perimeters of an old burn from 1992.
