Stay cautious around school zones
People are getting a little too relaxed when driving through school zones, so the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office will be placing more deputies around school zones and crosswalks in the next couple of weeks to enforce safer driving.
The sheriff’s office is reminding people to continue to pay close attention to the marked zones nears schools. Many of these areas have yellow signs, lower speed limits and sometimes flashing lights to get drivers to slow down. Deputies have received complaints and have noticed that people are not slowing down in the painted cross walks as they should, regardless if there is a crossing guard present. Also, people walking need to use the cross walks instead of jaywalking across the street.
“We have a lot of kids walking to and from school and still out and about even though it is getting colder. Plus, we have crossing guards in some areas. Those are particular areas where we have a lot of foot traffic, and we really want people to remember to watch for those kids, watch for those crossing guards,” said Sgt. Bryan Lovell, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office public information officer.
As the weather gets worse, it will become more difficult for drivers and people walking to see each other, so drivers should be sure to be even more cautious during this time.
