UPDATE: Utah stabbing suspect booked on attempted murder

The Latest on the stabbings of five students at a Utah high school (all times local):

A Utah teenager accused of stabbing five classmates in a high school locker room has been booked on suspicion of five counts of attempted murder.

Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez said Wednesday the 16-year-old is in a juvenile detention center after being booked. He says county prosecutors have not yet formally charged the teen, whose name is being withheld due to his age.

Martinez says investigators aren’t going to provide details on the teen’s motive in the early Tuesday morning attack in part because they aren’t medical professionals.

Investigators have determined the teen’s attack was not motivated by race, ethnicity or because he had been bullied. Martinez says the victims just happened to be near the suspect in the locker room when he attacked.

He says police determined the teen stabbed himself in the neck when a police officer assigned to the school arrived to the locker room where teachers had cornered the student.

The victims are all expected to survive.

Emergency calls from a Utah high school where police say five students were stabbed by a classmate recorded cries for help after the attack in the boy’s locker room.

In a 911 recording released Wednesday, a male caller says “He’s stabbing people! He’s stabbing people!”

Police say the victims at Mountain View High School ran for their lives Tuesday, covered in blood from stab wounds to their necks and torso.

Authorities say school workers cornered the 16-year-old boy, who was taken into custody by a police officer assigned to the school.

The victims are expected to survive. The suspect was also treated for self-inflicted stab wounds.

Police say they are investigating why the new student who was previously homeschooled stabbed his classmates in Orem, a city of about 90,000 people south of Salt Lake City.

Police say the suspect in the stabbing of five students at a Utah high school campus was in his first year at the campus in Orem after being home-schooled.

They said Tuesday the suspect had stabbed himself in the neck and was cornered by school workers until a police officer assigned to Mountain View High School subdued him with a Taser shot.

Authorities did not identify the suspect by name because of his age.

The five victims are all expected to survive, hospital officials said. The two most seriously injured were in critical but stable condition.

The attack that spread fear and panic among students who described a gruesome scene immediately after the stabbings.

Police said the knife used in the attack had a 3-inch blade.
