Record snowfall in Pocatello

Many people woke up to a sea of white with this latest winter storm that has many schools, businesses, and operations shut down for the day due to the dangerous driving conditions and road closures.

In fact, this storm is breaking records for the area. Pocatello received 8.6″ yesterday setting the monthly record for the most snow during a 24-hour period beating the old record of 8.3″ set back on January 5, 2005. Of course, those stats were taken at the airport with other parts of the city picking up much more than that.

The Snake River Plain was one of the hardest hit spots as a convergence zone kept the snow falling in buckets for hours on end.

This storm was similar to the Christmas Day snowstorm.

Snowfall totals ranged from 3-8 inches up towards Rexburg, Rigby and St. Anthony to 10-25 inches from Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Pocatello and into the Southern Highlands.

Unofficial reports of over 25 inches were observed on the western benches in Pocatello near Oldtown and in a few pockets around Marsh Valley and Oneida County.

Officials are urging residents to stay off the roads as much as possible and help out neighbors and those around them.
