City of Pocatello prepares for possible flooding

The City of Pocatello is taking precautions and preparing for possible flooding situation because of predicted rainfall and high temperatures in recent days.

The National Weather Service is forecasting rain to begin around noon Thursday with chances of rain continuing into next week. During that time, temperatures are forecasted to climb to around 40 degrees before returning to the low 20s Tuesday. Due to the conditions, there is a potential for excessive storm water to collect in low-lying areas around Pocatello.

“We take these forecasts very seriously,” said Tom Kirkman, Street Operations Superintendent. “Ahead of the storm, crews with the Street Operations Department have been clearing storm drains of snow and ice to help keep water flowing.”

The city will have sand and sandbags available for residents at the Street Operations shop located at 1080 South 1st Avenue. Residents will be required to fill their own sandbags and are asked to take no more than eight sandbags. If it becomes necessary, additional sand and sand bags will be moved to other locations in town.

“As always, if you see a storm drain that is plugged, please feel free to ‘adopt-the-drain’ and try to clear the obstruction,” Kirkman said.
