Interstate 86 closed due to high water

UPDATE: 2-6-17 4:55 p.m. Interstate 86 is closing to traffic due to flooding over the roadway at the Raft River crossing near milepost 14 in eastern Cassia County. Depending on how upcoming rain affects snowmelt throughout the Raft River valley, it may be two or more days before Interstate 86 reopens to traffic, Idaho Transportation reported. Video and pictures show trucks and cars trying to maneuver through the water that is covering the highway Monday afternoon. Officials said about one foot of water is running over the roadway, creating unsafe conditions for traffic.

There is no official detour near the closure. Alternate routes between Burley and Pocatello include I-84 to Interstate 15 or by U.S. 93 from Twin Falls to Arco then U.S. 26 to I-15 near Blackfoot.

Original Story: Standing water is covering both east and westbound lanes of traffic on Interstate 86 at milepost 14. Idaho State Police estimated one and a half feet of standing water covered a stretch of about 200 feet of the highway east of the I-84 and I-86 interchange, near Raft River. Idaho Transportation Department crews are evaluating the situation. Motorists are advised of the hazardous conditions. Some vehicles are stalling out in the deepest sections of the water.
