Jackson Ranger District finalizes fire reduction plan

As part of a Final Environmental Impact Statement, the Jackson Ranger District has issued a draft record of decision (ROD) for the proposed Teton to Snake Fuels Management Project. Publication of the ROD provides people who commented on the initial project to file objections. The project is located in Teton and Lincoln Counties, west of Jackson. The project stretches from Teton Village to Alpine. It outlines a plan to reduce fire danger in the wildland-urban interface. It is intended to reduce wildfire intensity, the need for aggressive suppression, reduce the likelihood of wildfire spreading to private lands, increase firefighter safety, and allow fire to operate more freely as a natural ecosystem process, especially in the Palisades Wilderness Study Area. The selected alternative would mechanically thin 1,853 acres and use prescribed fire on about 8,924 acres. The plan include 14 miles of road maintenance and reconstruction, 6 miles of fire control lines, and 27 log landings. More details about the plan are available here.
