Driver inattention investigated as possible cause for fatal crash

CASPER, Wyo. (KIFI) - On Thursday, a fatal crash occurred around milepost 101 on Wyoming 220 west of Casper, Wyoming. 

At 10:58 a.m., Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were notified of a motor vehicle collision.

A 1999 Honda Accord was headed west on Wyoming 220 when the vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane, colliding with a 2019 Kenworth commercial dump truck.

The driver of the Honda has been identified as 50-year-old Casper, Wyoming resident Joshua L. Atkinson. Atkinson was not wearing a seatbelt and succumbed to his injuries at the crash scene. 

The Kenworth driver has been identified as 53-year-old Casper, Wyoming resident Thomas E. Hall. Hall was wearing a seatbelt and not injured in the crash.

Driver inattention and cell phone use on the part of Atkinson are being investigated as potential contributing factors.

This is the 5th fatality on Wyoming's roadways in 2022 compared to 14 in 2021, 5 in 2020, and 16 in 2019 to date.
