New area code means it’s time to start dialing 10 digits

There is one more day until Idahoans have to dial 10 digits when calling. This is in preparation for the new area code 986 that will roll out next month.

The new area code will cover the entire Gem State. From here on out, if people dial only seven digits, the call will not complete and the caller will hear an announcement instructing them to redial with the area code included. But there are still a few people in the area who don’t really know the specifics about the change.

“I heard something about that the other day where you have to put 208 in front of everything. Pretty much, is that what it is?” a local said.

“That is what it is exactly. And that starts tomorrow, did you know that?” KIFI/KIDK’s Taja Davis asked.

“No, but that’s good to know,” the person said.

“Do you care that you have to dial three to four more digits?” Davis asked.

“Well, it’s a little bit of a hassle if you have a number in your phone that’s just seven digits. So, I’m going to have to go in and change the numbers, but there’s worse things in life.”

Here are some important facts:

Your current telephone number, including your current area code, will not change. For long distance calls, you still have to dial “1” in front of the area code. The price of a call, coverage area or other rates and services will not change. Calling 911 will not change.

As new numbers are needed, the new 986 area code may be assigned starting Sept. 5.
