Longtime Idaho judge dies in Boise
Retired Idaho Judge Larry Boyle, a native of Pocatello, was laid to rest in Boise Tuesday after a several-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease.
According to the U.S. District Court, Judge Boyle retired as a United States Magistrate Judge in January of 2017. He had served 31 years in federal and state courts of Idaho.
Boyle was named a U.S. Magistrate Judge in 1992, was reappointed in 2000, and served as a recalled magistrate judge from 2008 to 2017. He was headquartered in Boise.
Boyle was appointed by Governor Cecil D. Andrus to serve as a justice of the Idaho Supreme Court from 1989 to 1992. He served in the 7th Judicial District from 1986 to 1989 after a successful career as a trial litigator and co-founder of the firm of Hansen, Boyle, Beard and Martin in Idaho Falls.
Judge Boyle had been a visiting lecturer at Notre Dame University School of Law, the University of Idaho College of Law, BYU’s J. Reuben Clark School of Law, George Mason University School of Law, and the DOJ’s National Advocacy College. A prolific writer, he contributed articles to various legal journals and publications.
Judge Boyle received his undergraduate degree in 1968 from Brigham Young University and his J.D. in 1972 from the University of Idaho College of Law, where he served as an editor of the law review. After law school, he clerked for Chief Justice Henry F. McQuade and Justice Robert E. Bakes of the Idaho Supreme Court.
