Handcuffed man detained in traffic stop attempts to run from police
A Montana man attempted to run from police after being handcuffed during a traffic stop in Idaho Falls Wednesday afternoon.
Idaho Falls police say in a press release the incident happened just after 1 p.m.
In a statement released Thursday night, IFPD says, “Idaho Falls police conducted a traffic stop near Shoup Ave. and Constitution Way. The driver, later identified as Mosiah Prettypaint of Montana, had an outstanding warrant in Montana for Attempted Strangulation. Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived and stayed on the scene to assist until Mr. Prettypaint was detained.
Prettypaint complained the handcuffs were hurting his wrists. When IFPD Officer Shanor attempted to safely alleviate the pressure on Prettypaint’s wrists, the suspect lunged out of the patrol car and attempted to escape. The officer yelled commands for Prettypaint to stop. Prettypaint swung his arms trying to strike the officer with the handcuffs. The officer grabbed Prettypaint, who did not respond to the officer’s verbal commands to stop and get on the ground. Prettypaint repeatedly charged at Officer Shanor in an attempt to break free and escape.
Two civilians witnessed the incident and asked the officer if they could assist. The civilians helped restrain Prettypaint while the officer deployed his Taser X26. After the Taser was deployed, the two civilians assisted the police officer in restraining Prettypaint. Assisting IFPD officers arrived and were able to transport Prettypaint to Eastern Idaho Medical Center to treat his injuries. Officer Shanor was also treated for minor injuries.
The vehicle which Prettypaint was driving was reported stolen and had a fictitious plate. During the vehicle impound process, police retrieved drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine from the vehicle. The officers also retrieved burglary tools and connected Prettypaint to a vehicle burglary that occurred earlier the same day.
After Prettypaint was medically cleared by EIRMC, officers transported Prettypaint to the Bonneville County Jail, where he was charged with the following offenses:
Felony Warrant DC 17-1022 out of Montana (warrant served) Resisting or Obstructing Officers 18-705 Assault or Battery on Certain Personnel 18-915 {F} Controlled Substance – Possession 37-2732(a)(1)(A) Drug Paraphernalia – Use or Possess with Intent to Use 37-2734A(1) Burglary Tools-Possession of 18-1406 Theft of Possessing Stolen Property 18-2403(4) {F}
The IFPD wishes to thank the two civilians who used prudence in assisting Officer Shanor to restraining Mr. Prettypaint so he could be taken into custody.”
